Does a Photographer’s Style Really Matter?

If you read through photography sites, you’ll notice that a lot of photographers (including yours truly) talk more about our “style” than anything else. I describe myself as a fine art photographer while others refer to the photojournalism style, or their glamor style, or their traditional style, or… well, you get the point.

But does this really matter? Should it matter?

I’ll leave the last question up to you to decide but, for what it’s worth, I think that it does matter. A lot, actually.

Think about the artwork you have hanging on your walls – do you have works by Monet or Van Gogh? Or maybe a framed image of Elvis done in velvet. How is your kitchen decorated? In an old-world style or new and modern?

Different styles will affect us differently according to our tastes.

Photography is the same – different styles of photography will affect each and every one of us differently. I know people that find traditional portraiture very staid and boring while others find it very elegant and classic.

Your wedding photographs will last for decades and they are a physical reminder of that special day. If you take a bit of time to figure out the style of photography that you are drawn to and then find a photographer that excels in that area, you will be happier with the result and won’t regret the money you’ve spent.
