As you can imagine, I’ve seen and experienced some rather… umm… “interesting” weddings.
- There was the wedding where characters from Star Trek (Next Generation) were standing beside medieval knights.
- Then there was the drunken toast to the groom that managed to make 200 people cringe.
- “Hey, where did all the guys go?” – oh, they’re outside getting stoned.
- The most awkward episode was the maid of honor who, apparently, thought she had quite the sense of humor. She then proceeded to do the “roast of the bride” instead of the “toast to the bride”. I’ve watched Friar’s Club roasts that treated the person better.
- Okay, last one and I’ll word this as a warning. If you are going to insist on having a mosh pit at your reception, make sure your guests are roughly the same size. As a photographer, I want my photographs to be considered ‘art’, not ‘evidence’.
Alright, so what does any of this have to do with wedding songs? Well, as I prepare for my own wedding this Autumn, the task of deciding the music has started. It was while coming up with our “if you play it, we we’ll cancel the check” list for our DJ that I started remembering some of the fun things I’ve seen. It’s amazing what a memory trigger music can be.
Think back to weddings you attended. I am willing to bet that you can immediately picture a less-than-honorable scene if I merely mention “Paradise by the Dashboard Lights”. C’mon – who did you have a drunken hook-up with?
Remember those slow dances to “Stairway to Heaven”? Yes you do.
Guys, you never could breakdance. Ladies, you never thought that was cool.
Hit the floor for the Electric Slide and you will probably hit the floor.
So, what is (or was) your song? From the day of your wedding onward, hearing it again will evoke memories for the rest of your life.
So choose well: It could end up in a photographer’s blog.
